Remembering the Spanish Civil War

Volunteering as troops on the front line, adopting refugee children, committees raising funds in solidarity with victims, Wales’ communities played a vital role in defending democracy during the Spanish Civil War.

On St George’s Day (Sant Jordi), the patron saint of Aragón and Catalonia, we came together to remember those people who went to fight and those at home who gave their all to defend democracy, laying red roses near the memorial - the national flower of Catalonia.

Thanks to everybody that contributed by reading poetry, stories and the names of those who fought and died. We must remember and send our support and solidarity to those still imprisoned in Catalonia for their political beliefs and for accessing their right to democracy.
