This year, on International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, Plaid Ifanc is proud to stand in absolute solidarity with the trans community in Wales.
There has been a recent, sharp rise in transphobia. Today, Trans and non-binary people in Wales and beyond face unprecedented levels of abuse and discrimination in all areas of their lives simply for being themselves.
Recently published data from Stonewall (School Report Cymru 2017- The experiences of lesbian, gay, bi and trans pupils in Wales’ schools) shows that 41% of young trans people in Wales have attempted suicide and that young trans people face high rates of bullying and mental health issues.
Trans women in Wales experience particular challenges, including increased vulnerability to domestic abuse, violence, harassment, hate crime and homelessness.
Today, Plaid Ifanc reaffirms our belief that trans and non-binary people have the absolute right to be accepted and live lives free from hate, prejudice and discrimination.
We are proud to support a reformed, simpler and streamlined Gender Recognition Act that recognises non-binary identities and requires no medical diagnosis or presentation of evidence for trans people to have their identity legally recognised – thereby providing them with the right to their own self-determination.
Plaid Ifanc will continue to support the trans and non-binary community in Wales by active campaigning, providing a platform and voice for the trans and non-binary community in Wales and by challenging hatred and transphobia and promoting understanding, education and tolerance.
