The 2015 National Eisteddfod at Meifod proved to be a fantastic occasion. Between the Crowning, Chairing, Singing and usual Eisteddfod-esque ephemera, it also offered a platform to some more politically orientated events.
Tuesday morning saw Dwyfor Meirionydd MP, Liz Saville Roberts lead an interesting debate considering to what degree politics is depriving young people. Following her speech, an opportunity was offered to the audience to offer their thoughts on how to increase youth engagement in politics, with a number of Plaid Youth members active their opinions- offering solutions such as a greater emphasis on political education.
Wednesday proved to be a significant day in the history of Plaid Cymru, with the Party celebrating its 90th birthday. A special party was held on the Plaid Cymru stall, with Leanne Wood, Dafydd Iwan, and also our Women’s Officer, Branwen Dafydd wishing Plaid a happy birthday. Simillar excitment was had Wednesday afternoon as well, with a number of our young members attending a Question and Answer Session with Plaid’s Shadow Cabinet, whilst others opted to attend Dr T. Robin Chapman’s lecture on Islwyn Ffowc Elis’ campaign as a Plaid Cymru candidate in the 1962 Montgomeryshire by-election (an event described by our Chair, Aled Morgan Hughes as “one of the highlights of the Eisteddfod!“).
By Friday, with more and more young people arriving on the Maes to enjoy, with a substantial crowd coming to listen to Plaid Youth’s event- which saw our Women’s Officer, Branwen Dafydd interviewing the popular singer, Casi Wyn. An interesting debate was had on a number of topics- from music, to Patagonia to the London Welsh- with everyone present enjoying significantly!
We look forward to next years Eisteddfod at Abergavenny with excitement now!
