Plaid Cymru Leader Leanne Wood AM has today used National Voter Registration Day to urge the next generation to make their voices heard by ensuring that they’re registered to vote in the Westminster Election.
Leanne Wood said that the likelihood of a hung parliament meant that it is more important than ever for young people to secure a vote on May 7th and join Plaid Cymru in sending a message to the Westminster establishment that radical change is required.
Her appeal comes as tens of thousands of people across Wales are believed to have fallen off the electoral register.
Leanne Wood said:
“National Voter Registration Day marks an opportunity for all the people of Wales to make sure they can make their voices heard on May 7th.
“With this election set to be the most unpredictable for decades, I would encourage everyone to ensure they are registered so that they can influence the changing political landscape of the UK.
“Young people have a particularly important role to play. If their energy and enthusiasm could be harnessed, they could provide the driving force of the radical change required to secure a fairer, more prosperous society.
“The inclusion of Plaid Cymru in the televised debates marks a step in the right direction. Not only will Wales now have a voice in these debates - the case for a progressive alternative will also be heard.
“This alternative is already being backed by the numerous young people who join Plaid Cymru teams on the campaign trail throughout Wales every week.
“As in other countries, there is great potential for anti-austerity parties to inspire the next generation to get involved in politics and stake their claim in shaping a better future for all nations of the UK.
“When Plaid Cymru wins, Wales is strong. I urge everyone to secure their vote on May 7th and to join us in sending a clear message to the Westminster establishment that we refuse to be treated as a second-class nation.”
